How to Look After Your Engagement Ring

Posted on: 13/01/2020

Many of us have a collection of valuable and precious jewellery pieces in our jewellery boxes. But our engagement ring will probably be the most expensive jewellery piece that we ever wear or own, due to its great significance and the beauty it portrays. It will always stand out from the rest.

With expensive striking diamonds and perfect precious metals, more care is needed to make sure that our engagement rings are looked after properly. Some of us aren’t used to looking after something so valuable, so it can be hard to adjust and figure out what to do, especially if we’ve only just become engaged!

Due to the cost and quality, it’s easy to assume that engagement rings are indestructible, but this is not the case. They are strong pieces of jewellery, but they’re still subject to damage and wear and tear. Everyday life can have an affect on how a lovely engagement ring looks and ages, so it’s important that we care for them properly to keep them looking their best and to deter any future damage.

Today on our blog we’re going to give you our top tips on how to look after your engagement ring…

Make Sure Your Engagement Ring Fits Properly

This might sound like an obvious request, but make sure your ring fits you properly. This actually goes for all rings, not just engagement rings. If a ring is too big you run the risk of it bending and changing shape.

We do offer a ring sizing service, and all rings purchased from us are eligible for free ring sizing, so we recommend you pop into store to get measured after you’ve said ‘yes.’ You’re also welcome to pop in if you’re not sure or want us to double check for you.

Clean Your Engagement Ring Regularly

If you’re not cleaning your ring properly, you’re not allowing it to be as beautiful as it can be. Cleaning your ring properly will preserve your engagement ring’s beauty. All that day-to-day wear with no cleaning in between can start to make your ring look a little duller than it did when you first purchased it.

Soap and water will give your ring a light clean, but if you’re looking for something that’s a little bit more effective, we recommend our Town Talk jewellery cleaning range. A jewellery dip will freshen up your ring, whilst a jewellery cloth will do some magic on the band and make it shine. And we highly recommend the Town Talk Exquisite Jewel Sparkle Wand, which will have your diamonds looking sparkly in no time!

These little at-home remedies will do wonders for your ring, but it wont stop dirt building up underneath the diamonds and stones over time. All that day-to-day wear can attract dirt build up that sticks behind your diamond in the setting. This will ultimately cause diamonds to look dull because the build up of gunk stops light passing through your diamond, thus hindering its sparkle potential! To remove this build up, we recommend that you get your engagement ring professionally cleaned at least once a year. If you choose to do this through one of our stores we’ll also check your full ring to see if there is any other work needed to keep your stones safe and band strong.

Look After Those Stones!

Many people believe that it’s not possible to cause damage to a diamond. Although diamonds are one of the hardest naturally occurring substances in the world, they’re not invincible. They can chip and crack if they’ve taken an aggressive knock, which is why it’s important to know when to remove your ring.

Know When To Remove Your Engagement Ring

To avoid causing damage to your new engagement ring you’ll need to know when you should and shouldn’t be wearing it. Washing your hands carefully with mild soap and water is not likely to damage your ring, but using cleaning products and chemicals whilst wearing your ring can. If you’re cleaning or doing lots of hands on tasks you increase the risk of physically catching or knocking your engagement ring.

Whilst we’re on the topic of hands on tasks, it is essential that you remove your ring if you’re going to be gardening, doing any DIY, lifting, working out or cooking.

A cold change in temperature can also cause your fingers to shrink, so if you go swimming remember to take your ring off and put it somewhere safe – you don’t want it to slide off mid-swim! It is suggested that you remove your ring whilst you sleep too, just in case you accidentally catch it on something.

Finally, if you use lotions, hand creams or hair products, we recommend that you also remove your ring for this. The solution can get stuck behind your stones which will increase dirt build up in the setting quicker than normal.
