F.Hinds was established in 1856 and has been independently run and family owned ever since. With over 115 stores in the UK, perhaps you have noticed us on your local high street or in your favourite shopping centre? We proudly opened our newest store in Bath in October 2022 with the hope of more to come in the near future. Not only this, we are showing our existing branches a little love, modernising the look and feel of shop floors and displays to create the best experience possible for our valued customers.

In 2013 we welcomed Paul into the Hinds family business, with his brother Jeremy not long after – together representing the 7th generation of Hinds to play an active role in the running of the company. Paul's wife gave birth to Nicholas in 2015 with daughter Rosalind following a few years later and in 2020 Jeremy and his wife welcomed son Angus. Exciting things to come from all three in the future!

With roughly 1,000 members of staff across the branches and Head Office (some of which boast careers spanning decades!) we offer a comprehensive, award winning training program with a unique working atmosphere. We were thrilled to be voted Family Business of the Year 2014, Multiple Fashion Jewellery Retailer of the Year in 2019 and 2021 plus received the Outstanding Contribution to the Industry award at the Professional Jeweller awards in 2022.

We would love to see you in store browsing our handpicked jewellery or our extensive watch and gift ranges.

our story

1825

Our journey in the jewellery and watchmaking industry began with a young Joseph Hinds offering clockmaking services in Stamford, Lincolnshire, although we know his uncle was also a clockmaker before him. With modest prices and expertise (according to his advert in the local paper!), Joseph quickly became successful and was honoured with the task of maintaining the clock in the most prominent of Stamford’s famous churches.

1856

Joseph went on to share his knowledge of watchmaking with his son George who moved to London and took on a store in Harrow Road, Paddington, before moving to Edgware Road in 1876. Over the next 50 years, several members of the family followed Joseph’s lead and opened shops across the capital and beyond.

1900s-1910s

By the turn of the century Joseph’s grandson William was running the business and opening new stores. He started buying direct from manufacturers to cut out the middleman and to be able to offer better prices to his customers.

Great grandsons William (Will), George and Frank joined the business in the years leading up to the First World War, however for George it was short lived as he was sadly killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, a year after his father William died in 1915.

F.Hinds Diamond Buying History

F.Hinds have been jewellers for over 160 years, with George Henry Hinds opening the Harrow Road store in London Paddington in 1856. George's son William started buying diamonds directly from manufacturers around the turn of the 20th Century and similarly, William's son Frank used to buy loose diamonds both before WWII and afterwards: this was so they could offer the best value for money by removing the middlemen. Andrew Hinds (our current diamond buyer and Frank's grandson), continues to utilise this value-for-money buying technique today, which is why you will find all F.Hinds diamond prices to be very competitive.

Frank passed the diamond buying on to eldest son Eric in the late 1940s until his younger brother Roy took over in 1954. Whilst Eric went on to manage the property side of the business, Roy explored the diamond world and first went to the main diamond market in Antwerp in January 1959. He visited twice more that year and in fact, we are not aware of any other UK retailer visiting the Antwerp diamond market as early as this. Roy continued to visit three times a year with an estimated 60+ visits over the next two decades, until his youngest son Andrew took over in the 1990s.

Making our Diamond Rings

Up until the 1960s, our loose diamonds were set into rings and jewellery by a single craftsman in Birmingham. However, from the early fifties, rings were also created in the F.Hinds workshops and when the Birmingham goldsmith retired, we took on his work and were making most of the diamond rings in-house. Back then, engagement ring designs were classic and changed little over the years so this was relatively straightforward.

Designs in those days were classic and traditional. When customer tastes became more adventurous we realised that, while we were experts in the high quality manufacturing of diamond solitaire rings, we were not specialists in manufacturing rings with multiple stones or those with a smaller diamond content; both styles which changed more frequently.

Jewellery manufacturing expertise was spreading around the world meaning thousands of new designs were being produced every year, with influences coming from many countries and cultures. As a result, fashions were changing much more rapidly including engagement rings and wedding jewellery which had historically remained very traditional. F.Hinds therefore started to source the latest designs from across the globe to bring a choice to customers shopping on UK high streets.

However, a healthy proportion of our jewellery is still made in the UK, including our range of certificated diamond solitaires, which are individually selected and sourced from all over the world by our experienced gemmologist Andrew Hinds. These are then individually made to order by our craftsman in his Birmingham workshop, just like we did well over 60 years ago. The quality and service we can provide this way has truly stood the test of time.
